What is local business search?

When a person is looking for a local business or any business they will do a search online to find them. They may start with the name of the business or the name of a product. And then they may narrow down the search by adding their location. Now they are looking for a business or product located where they live. This is a local business search.

I own a business why should I care?

First lets look at a local business that only sells its products in its store. This could be a restaurant or a service business.

To find this business people would need to do some type of search. They could look in the yellow pages, the ads in the newspapers or magazines. But today they (over 60%) search online. It’s easier and faster. And with over 70% of Americans online, online search is very popular.

So this local business needs an online website so people can find them. Find them and not their competitors.

The second type of business is one that has a store but also sells online. As long as they have customers visiting their brick and mortar location, they need to be active in the local business search. Remember your competitors will be.

First Steps

You want to be in the local search. So where do you start? First search for your business name. Are you there? If you are found, look at each of the result pages. Are these your pages?

Then start with keywords that searchers might use to find you. Search these keywords and see if you are found. Again review the pages. Are these your pages?

If they are your pages, can you claim them? Google Maps, Google Local Business Center, Bing Local Business Center and Yahoo Local Business Center all add sites based on information they have found on other sites. So your business could be there. And if so you as the owner need to claim it.

Claiming your local listing is the first step. In future articles I will talk about more steps you need to take.
